نظرة عامة
Hospital care in Denmark is entirely free for all residents, including emergency treatment, surgery, inpatient stays, diagnostic tests, and medications administered during hospitalization. There are no copayments, daily fees, or any other charges for public hospital treatment. The five Danish regions are responsible for hospital services, funded through a combination of national block grants and activity-based funding.
Denmark has invested heavily in modernizing its hospital infrastructure through a national hospital plan, consolidating smaller hospitals into larger, highly specialized super hospitals. The average hospital stay is approximately 4.5 days, among the shortest in Europe, reflecting Denmark's emphasis on day surgery and early supported discharge. Common procedure costs (borne by the system) include hip replacement at approximately 80,000-120,000 kr, coronary bypass at 200,000-350,000 kr, and normal childbirth at 25,000-40,000 kr.
Patients have the right to choose which public hospital to receive treatment at (frit sygehusvalg) and can also choose approved private hospitals if the public waiting time exceeds 30 days. This extended free choice (udvidet frit sygehusvalg) has been an important mechanism for managing waiting times and giving patients real alternatives. Emergency care is accessed through the national emergency number (112) or regional medical helplines, and is always free of charge.
