Resumen
Emergency care in Canada is fully covered under the universal Medicare system for all Canadian residents. Emergency department visits, ambulance transport (with some exceptions), emergency surgery, diagnostic imaging, and hospital admission are provided at no direct cost to the patient. The 911 system coordinates emergency response across all provinces and territories.
Despite being free at point of use, emergency care in Canada faces significant access challenges. Average ER wait times are among the longest in developed countries, with the median time from triage to physician assessment being approximately 2-3 hours, and total ER visit times averaging 4-6 hours. In some provinces and during peak periods, wait times can exceed 8-12 hours. Approximately 15 million ER visits occur annually across Canada, with an estimated 30% considered potentially avoidable with better access to primary care.
Ambulance fees are one notable exception to universal coverage, with most provinces charging patients for ground ambulance transport. Ontario charges C$45-240 per trip depending on medical necessity, British Columbia charges C$80, and Alberta charges C$250-385. Air ambulance (medevac) services in remote and northern communities are essential but costly, with interprovincial air ambulance transfers sometimes generating bills of C$10,000-50,000, though most are covered by provincial plans when medically necessary.
