Mental Health Care Costs in Netherlands

Mental healthcare in the Netherlands is covered under the basic insurance package but is subject to the annual deductible (eigen risico) of €385. The system distinguishes between generalist basic mental healthcare (basis-GGZ) for mild to moderate conditions and specialist mental healthcare (specialistische GGZ) for severe or complex conditions. Access to both requires a referral from a GP, who acts as a gatekeeper in the Dutch system.

Under the basic insurance, patients can access a psychologist or psychiatrist through the GGZ system. Basis-GGZ treatment is covered for a set number of sessions depending on severity, while specialist GGZ provides longer-term treatment for conditions such as severe depression, personality disorders, or PTSD. Waiting times for mental healthcare have become a major issue, with average waits of 12-16 weeks for basis-GGZ and up to 6 months or more for specialist GGZ in some regions.

Private psychologists and therapists outside the insured GGZ system charge €80-140 per session, which is not covered by basic insurance. Some supplementary insurance plans cover a limited number of private psychology sessions, typically 5-10 per year. The Dutch government has been actively working to reduce mental health waiting times through additional funding and reforms to the GGZ system, recognizing the growing demand for mental healthcare services.
