Prescription drugs in Mexico are significantly cheaper than in the United States, drawing an estimated 4-6 million Americans across the border annually for medication purchases. Many prescription medications in the US are available over the counter in Mexico, including antibiotics, blood pressure medications, and some pain medications (though controlled substances require a prescription). A monthly supply of common medications typically costs 30-70% less than US prices.

For IMSS and ISSSTE enrollees, prescription drugs are free when dispensed at public health facility pharmacies, though availability issues sometimes force patients to purchase medications at private pharmacies. Private pharmacy prices for common medications include metformin (diabetes) at approximately $50-150 MXN per month, omeprazole (acid reflux) at $50-200 MXN, and losartan (blood pressure) at $80-200 MXN. Generic medications are widely available and significantly cheaper than branded alternatives.

The Mexican government regulates drug prices through the Interinstitutional Commission of the Basic Table of Inputs for the Health Sector, which sets maximum prices for medications purchased by public institutions. Private pharmacy chains like Farmacias del Ahorro, Farmacias Guadalajara, and Farmacias Similares compete aggressively on price, with Similares specializing in affordable generic alternatives. Online pharmacies have also grown in popularity, offering delivery services and competitive pricing across the country.
