Mental healthcare in Denmark is covered within the public healthcare system, though access varies by severity and type of service. Psychiatric hospital care, both inpatient and outpatient through regional psychiatric centres, is completely free. GP consultations for mental health concerns are free, and GPs can refer patients to psychiatrists, who are also free to visit with a referral under Group 1 insurance.
Psychological treatment is partially covered for certain conditions through the reimbursement scheme (psykologordningen). Patients aged 18+ with mild to moderate depression or anxiety can receive up to 12 sessions with a psychologist, with the public system covering approximately 60% of the cost (around 550 kr per session paid by patient). A GP referral is required, and the programme is limited to specific diagnoses. Private psychologist sessions outside this scheme cost 900-1,400 kr per session with no public reimbursement.
Denmark faces challenges with mental health capacity, particularly for children and young people. Waiting times for child and adolescent psychiatry can reach 3-6 months in some regions. The government has implemented a 10-year plan for psychiatry (psykiatriplan) with significant additional funding to improve access, reduce waiting times, and expand community-based mental health services. Emergency psychiatric care is available through psychiatric emergency departments, accessible 24/7 without referral.
