Überblick
NHS waiting times have been a persistent concern, particularly following the COVID-19 pandemic. The NHS Constitution states that patients should wait no more than 18 weeks from GP referral to treatment, but this target has been consistently missed. As of 2024, over 7.5 million patients were on waiting lists in England alone, with some waiting over a year for elective procedures.
Emergency department waiting times have also deteriorated. The target of seeing 95% of A&E patients within four hours has not been met nationally since 2015. Average waits for cancer treatment referrals, while prioritised, have also increased, with the 62-day target from urgent referral to first treatment being frequently missed.
The NHS has launched various recovery programmes aimed at reducing the backlog. These include increased use of community diagnostic centres, surgical hubs, and virtual consultations. Despite these efforts, regional variation remains significant, with some areas performing substantially better than others.
