Panoramica
Dental care in Sweden is subsidized through the national dental insurance system (tandvardsstod) but remains one of the more significant out-of-pocket health expenses. Every adult receives a general dental care allowance (allman tandvardsbidraget, ATB) of 300 kr or 600 kr per year (600 kr for those aged 24-29 or 65+), which can be applied toward preventive care. A standard dental checkup and cleaning costs approximately 1,200-2,000 kr.
The high-cost protection system (hogkostnadsskydd) for dental care provides graduated subsidies for annual dental costs exceeding 3,000 kr. For costs between 3,000-15,000 kr, the subsidy covers 50% of the amount. For costs exceeding 15,000 kr, the subsidy increases to 85%. This means that even extensive dental work has a degree of financial protection, though patients still bear significant costs for major procedures. A single dental implant typically costs 10,000-25,000 kr.
Children and young adults up to age 23 receive completely free dental care in Sweden, including orthodontics if clinically indicated. This is one of the most generous youth dental coverage programmes in Europe. The transition to paying for dental care at age 24 can be a significant adjustment, and many young adults delay dental visits during this transition period.
