Visão Geral
Dental care for adults in Norway is largely not covered by the public healthcare system, making it one of the most expensive out-of-pocket health expenses. A routine dental checkup costs approximately 800-1,500 kr, while a checkup with cleaning and X-rays typically runs 1,200-2,000 kr. Fillings cost 700-2,000 kr depending on size and material, and root canal treatment ranges from 3,000-8,000 kr per tooth.
Dental crowns cost approximately 5,000-10,000 kr, and dental implants are among the most expensive procedures at 15,000-30,000 kr per implant including the crown. Norwegian dental fees are among the highest in the world, reflecting high labor costs and the limited competition in some regions. The Norwegian Health Economics Administration (HELFO) provides partial reimbursement for dental treatment related to certain medical conditions, including dry mouth caused by medication, severe periodontitis, and dental injuries.
Children and adolescents up to age 18 receive free dental care through the public dental service (Den offentlige tannhelsetjenesten). Young adults aged 19-24 receive dental care at a 75% discount through the public system. Other priority groups eligible for free or subsidized public dental care include elderly residents in institutions, people with mental disabilities, and individuals receiving home nursing care. Despite these provisions, dental costs remain a significant financial burden for most Norwegian adults.
