Dental care in Switzerland is notably excluded from the mandatory basic health insurance (OKP), making it entirely an out-of-pocket expense for most residents. This makes Switzerland one of the most expensive countries in the world for dental care. A routine dental checkup and cleaning costs CHF 200–500, while a single filling ranges from CHF 150–400 depending on the material and dentist.

More complex dental procedures are proportionally expensive. A dental crown costs CHF 1,000–2,500, a root canal treatment costs CHF 800–2,000, and a single dental implant can cost CHF 3,000–6,000 including the crown. Orthodontic treatment for children or adults ranges from CHF 5,000–15,000 depending on complexity and duration. Swiss dental fees are among the highest globally due to high labour costs and the exclusion from insurance coverage.

Dental treatment is only covered by the OKP in cases where it results from a severe, unavoidable illness, an accident (covered by accident insurance), or when dental treatment is necessary due to a serious medical condition. Some supplementary dental insurance plans are available at CHF 20–60 per month, but they typically only cover a portion of costs and often have waiting periods and annual caps of CHF 1,000–5,000.
