Überblick

Norway's universal healthcare system requires patients to pay modest copayments (egenandeler) for most outpatient services. A GP visit costs approximately 200-250 kr, while a specialist consultation costs 350-400 kr. Emergency department visits cost around 300-400 kr. Physiotherapy sessions require copayments of 200-250 kr, and psychological consultations cost 350-400 kr per session.

The annual cost cap system provides crucial financial protection through the frikort (exemption card). Once a patient's approved copayments reach approximately 3,165 kr in a calendar year, they automatically receive a frikort entitling them to free approved healthcare services for the remainder of the year. The frikort system is digitally managed, and patients receive their card automatically once the threshold is reached, eliminating the need for manual tracking of receipts.

Children under 16 receive completely free healthcare in Norway, including GP visits, specialist care, and hospital treatment. Young people aged 16-18 also receive free GP visits and most healthcare services. Pregnant women receive free maternity care throughout pregnancy and delivery. Hospital stays, including surgery and all inpatient treatment, are entirely free for all residents regardless of age, with no daily fees charged.
