Oversigt
Prescription drug costs in Singapore are managed through a combination of government subsidies, Medisave, and the Standard Drug List (SDL). Public healthcare institutions provide subsidized medications based on the SDL, which categorizes drugs into fully subsidized, partially subsidized, and non-standard categories. Patients at polyclinics typically pay S$5-30 per medication item after subsidies, depending on their subsidy tier based on income and residency status.
Medisave can be used to pay for certain outpatient medications for chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, and mental health conditions under the Chronic Disease Management Programme (CDMP). The CDMP Medisave withdrawal limit is S$700 per Medisave account per year. For medications not covered by subsidies or CDMP, patients pay full price, which can be significant for newer specialty drugs.
Singapore's pharmaceutical market is relatively small, and drug prices are not directly regulated by the government. Instead, public hospitals and polyclinics negotiate prices through bulk purchasing via the Group Purchasing Office. Private pharmacy prices can be 20-50% higher than public institution prices. The Medication Assistance Fund (MAF) provides additional support for needy patients who require expensive medications not covered by standard subsidies, ensuring that financial barriers do not prevent access to essential treatments.
