Oversigt
Hospital care in Switzerland is covered by basic health insurance for stays in the general ward of a listed hospital within the patient's canton of residence. The costs are split between the insurer (approximately 45%) and the canton (approximately 55%) through a system of per-case flat rates based on the SwissDRG system (Swiss Diagnosis Related Groups). Patients pay their standard deductible and 10% co-insurance, plus a daily hospital contribution of CHF 15.
The average cost of a hospital stay in Switzerland is among the highest in the world, with per-case costs averaging CHF 10,000–15,000 for a standard admission. A hip replacement costs approximately CHF 18,000–25,000, a coronary bypass CHF 35,000–50,000, and a normal childbirth CHF 6,000–9,000. These costs are largely borne by insurers and cantons rather than patients directly, though the patient's deductible and co-insurance still apply.
Supplementary hospital insurance (Spitalzusatzversicherung) is popular, with options for semi-private (two-bed room) or private (single room) coverage, as well as free choice of hospital across cantons and free choice of treating physician. Semi-private supplementary insurance costs approximately CHF 100–200 per month, while private coverage can cost CHF 200–500 per month depending on age and canton.
