Przegląd

Mental healthcare in Switzerland has undergone significant reform with the introduction of the new psychotherapy reimbursement model in July 2022. Psychotherapy provided by licensed psychologists working under the delegation of a physician (or independently since the reform) is now covered by mandatory basic insurance (OKP). Previously, only psychiatrist-provided therapy was covered. Patients pay the standard deductible and 10% co-insurance, with a typical 50-minute session costing CHF 150-200 from which the patient's share depends on their deductible status.

Psychiatrist consultations are covered under basic insurance and have always been reimbursed. A psychiatric consultation costs approximately CHF 200-350 per session. Despite improved coverage, waiting times for mental health treatment remain a challenge, averaging 4-12 weeks in urban areas and potentially longer in rural cantons. Switzerland has approximately 5,600 psychiatrists and 11,000 psychologists, but distribution is uneven, with cantons like Geneva and Zurich having significantly better access than central and eastern cantons.

Private mental health care outside the insurance system or beyond approved session limits can be costly. Private psychotherapy sessions cost CHF 150-250 per session, paid entirely out of pocket. Supplementary insurance (Zusatzversicherung) may cover additional sessions or alternative therapies. Switzerland has a relatively high rate of mental health service utilization compared to other European countries, with approximately 17% of the population reporting mental health consultations. The national suicide prevention programme and cantonal crisis intervention services provide additional support.
